Story of Heroes - Tobin

Tobin

Back in the fall of 2002, school was the furthest thing from the minds of 2-year-old Tobin and his parents. Tobin was in the middle of treatment for a malignant brain tumour. He had surgery, chemotherapy, and 33 stereotactic radiation treatments.

In the summer of 2005 before grade 1, an MRI showed the residual tumour had grown resulting in another major brain surgery and more chemo. During the year and a half that Tobin was on chemo, he was homeschooled so his schoolwork did not suffer.

In June of 2009, another routine MRI showed significant tumour growth and Tobin had yet another major brain surgery. That September, on what should have been his first day of grade 5, Tobin had his first day of re-radiation. He was sick for most of grade 5, but was able to keep up with his schoolwork because he was still homeschooled.

Today, Tobin is studying Nursing at the University of Calgary. He is thrilled to be pursuing his dream of becoming a paediatric nurse. In addition to his studies, Tobin made the Junior Varsity Rowing Team at UCalgary and was accepted into the Emerging Leaders Program. He is currently working on his Gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh program.
